Day 76 - The circus has come to town

and erected a tent!

At this point, water on the hull is completely unacceptable. I ran a 3/16" rope three times across the shed and then stretched a 10'x30' piece of poly over the top. And then it was time to start putting on the skim coat of thickened epoxy.

I started by mixing up 3 ounce batches of epoxy, adding some microballons for color and some cab-o-sil for thickening. Not too much because I need to be able to spread it and it needs to be thin enough to flow under the straightedge, but thick enough so it won't run. I used the 24" straightedge, reaching up to the center of the keel pulling the epoxy down the hull towards and over the chines, then picking up the excess epoxy running down the sides and putting it back up on the keel. Repeat, working from the keel to the bow. Then I worked from the bow back toward the keel spreading on the sides.

Now the sides are in much better shape so I was able to use a small spreader sweeping back and forth, top to bottom in sections.

First the starboard side, then the port side and finally the transom with the final excess used underneath to finish the last three fillet joints. Here's some photos from the work tonight. You can clearly see the low areas around the scarfs, they're really purple!

Quiet contemplative work with music from the smartphone playing in the background.

Oh, and the tent? Did it's job, as I could hear the occasional smack! of a water droplet hitting the plastic.
